Claude Pro vs Max: Which Plan Does Your Business Need?

Claude Pro vs Max is mostly about how much you use Claude, not what Claude can do. Pro costs $20 a month. The Claude Max plan starts at $100 a month and gives you 5x or 20x Pro's usage in each five-hour session, plus a few extras. Most business owners should start on Pro and move up only when they keep hitting the limit.

  • Pro: $20 a month, or $17 a month if you pay $200 for the year.
  • Max: from $100 a month, billed monthly only. You choose 5x or 20x Pro's usage.
  • Claude Duet: included on both plans at no extra cost during the preview, for US accounts through a waitlist. It draws from the same limits.
  • Our pick: start on Pro. Move to Max when the limit stops your work most weeks.

We checked every price and rule in this post on Anthropic's own pages on 26 October 2026: the Claude pricing page, the Claude Duet product page and launch post, and Anthropic's help center. Prices are in US dollars and leave out tax. Anthropic changes its plans often, so check the date.

What is the difference between Claude Pro and Max?

The main difference is usage. Max has everything in Pro, then gives you more room to use it. Here is what Max adds, from Anthropic's pricing page:

  • More usage. You pick 5x or 20x Pro's usage in each five-hour session.
  • Higher output limits. Anthropic lists higher output limits for all tasks.
  • Early access to advanced Claude features.
  • Priority access when Claude is under heavy traffic.
  • API credits. $100 a month on Max 5x and $200 a month on Max 20x, to build on Claude's developer platform.
  • More room for Fable. On Max, the Fable model can use up to half of your weekly limits. On Pro, Fable only runs on usage credits, which you pay for.

Plenty stays the same. Both plans get Opus, Sonnet and Haiku. Both get Claude Code, Projects, Research, Claude in Chrome and the Microsoft 365 connector. Both can turn on usage credits. And both share one pool of usage across the web, desktop, mobile and Claude Code.

Max does not give you a smarter Claude. It mostly gives you more of the same Claude.

So the real question is not which plan is better. It is whether you run out. If you do not, Max is money you do not need to spend.

What do Claude Pro and Max cost?

Pro is $20 a month, or $17 a month on a yearly plan. Max starts at $100 a month and is billed monthly only. Here is the full picture from Claude's pricing page on 26 October 2026, with Free and Team added for comparison:

PlanPrice (USD, before tax)BillingUsageClaude Duet
Free$0NoneBase levelNo
Pro$20 a month, or $17 a month paid yearly ($200 up front)Monthly or yearlyAt least 5x Free per sessionYes, US waitlist
MaxFrom $100 a monthMonthly only5x or 20x Pro per sessionYes, US waitlist
Team, standard seat$25 a seat a month, or $20 paid yearlyMonthly or yearlyMore than ProNot yet
Team, premium seat$125 a seat a month, or $100 paid yearlyMonthly or yearly5x a standard seatNot yet

Three things in that table are easy to miss.

Max has no yearly discount. Pro gets cheaper if you pay for the year. Max does not offer yearly billing at all. So a full year of Max costs at least $1,200, against $200 for a year of Pro paid up front.

The 20x price is not on the page. The pricing page lists Max as "From $100" and does not print a separate price for the 20x tier. We have left it out rather than guess. Check the price shown before you upgrade.

Max comes with API credits. That is $100 a month on 5x and $200 a month on 20x, for building on Claude's developer platform. If nobody in your business writes code against the API, you can ignore them. If someone does, they cover part of the cost.

Is Claude Duet included on Pro?

Yes. Claude Duet is included on both Pro and Max at no extra cost during the research preview. You do not need Max to get it. But Duet draws from the same limits as the rest of Claude, so on Pro it shares a smaller pool.

Duet is Anthropic's always-on assistant app. It watches your email, calendar and business tools, sends you a morning brief, and drafts next steps for you to review. We covered it in depth in Claude Duet for small business. Here are the access rules from Anthropic's Get started with Claude Duet help article, checked 26 October 2026:

  • You need a Pro or Max plan and a Claude account in the US.
  • You join a waitlist on the Claude Duet product page. Invites go out in waves, so there is no set date.
  • Use the email on your Claude account. On your phone, use the Apple or Google account linked to that same email.
  • It is its own app on iPhone and Android, and you can open it on claude.ai on a computer.
  • Team and Enterprise plans do not have it yet. Anthropic says it plans to add them later.

Does Claude Duet run well on Pro?

It runs on Pro, with one catch. Anthropic says Duet uses your plan's five-hour session and weekly limits, at the same rate as chats. Its background work counts too, like the morning brief and its check-ins. So you may reach your limits sooner than with chat alone. Big jobs, like a financial model or a deck, take more turns and more background work.

Anthropic does try to keep it lean. Duet checks your accounts at set intervals, every few hours, partly so the background work does not use up your limits. And when you are let in, you get one full limit reset for both your session and weekly limits. That offer runs until 30 November 2026.

Our view: try Duet on Pro first. If your Pro limits were already tight before Duet, expect them to get tighter.

One more thing if your business runs on Outlook. Pro includes the Microsoft 365 connector in the main Claude app, but Anthropic says Microsoft 365 is not available in Duet yet.

How much more usage do you get on Max?

Max gives you 5x or 20x Pro's usage in each five-hour session, depending on the tier you pick. Pro, in turn, gives at least 5x the usage of Free. Anthropic does not turn any of this into a message count.

That is on purpose. Claude's pricing page says there is no fixed number of messages. Anthropic's help article on how usage and length limits work lists what changes how fast you use them:

  • How long and complex your conversations are.
  • Which features you use. Tools and connectors are heavy.
  • Which model you chat with.
  • The effort level you pick.

A few more rules apply to both plans:

  • Two limits. A session limit that resets every five hours, and a weekly limit on top.
  • One pool. Claude on the web, desktop, mobile and Claude Code all draw from the same limits. So does Claude Duet.
  • Fable has a ceiling on Max. It can use up to 50% of your weekly limits.
  • More caps can come. Anthropic says it may add other limits, like weekly and monthly caps.

The 5x and 20x figures are per session. The pricing page does not say how big each plan's weekly limit is. So Max 20x gives you a much bigger five-hour window, but Anthropic's pages do not tell us how far your week stretches.

A plain way to think about it. If Pro runs out halfway through a busy work block, Max 5x gives you five times that room in the same five hours.

When is Pro enough?

Pro is enough when Claude is a helper you use a few times a day, not a tool you work inside all day. That is where we would start most small business owners.

Pro fits you if:

  • You use Claude to write emails, quotes, posts and plans, or to think through a problem.
  • You rarely see the limit message, or only at the end of a long session.
  • You want to try Claude Duet and see how much of your limits it uses.
  • You use Claude Code now and then, for a small script or a page fix, not for hours at a time.

If you hit the limit once in a while, you have two cheaper fixes than Max. First, wait. The session limit resets every five hours. Second, turn on usage credits. On paid plans they let you keep working at standard API rates instead of stopping. You pay for what you use, so watch the total.

Pro is also the safer bet on price. A year of Pro paid up front is $200. A year of Max is at least $1,200. That gap should buy you something you really need.

When is Max worth it?

Max is worth it when the limit costs you work most weeks, not just now and then. If you keep waiting on a reset while a job sits half done, your plan has become the thing slowing you down.

Max makes sense if:

  • You hit the Pro limit most weeks. Waiting five hours in the middle of a job costs more than the upgrade.
  • You live in Claude Code. We build client websites with Claude Code. Long coding sessions mean long threads and lots of tools, and Anthropic says both use more of your limit.
  • You lean on Claude Duet. Lots of connected apps, plus big jobs like decks and forecasts, all come out of the same pool as your chats.
  • You want the Fable model with real room. On Max it can use up to half your weekly limit. On Pro it runs only on usage credits.
  • Someone on your team builds on the API. The $100 or $200 in monthly API credits covers part of the plan's cost.
  • Busy times hurt you. Max gets priority access when Claude is under heavy traffic.

If you plan to build your own agents, those API credits matter more. We compared two ways to run them in Claude Managed Agents vs OpenClaw.

Max is not worth it if your problem is a few very long chats. Start a fresh conversation, turn off tools you are not using, and lower the effort level for simple jobs. Anthropic suggests all of these. Try them for a week before you pay five times more.

Should a business pick Team instead of Max?

Pick Team if more than one person needs Claude. Pick Pro or Max if it is just you, or if you want Claude Duet, which Team does not have yet.

Team is for 2 to 150 people. A standard seat is $25 a month, or $20 a month paid yearly, with more usage than Pro. A premium seat is $125 a month, or $100 paid yearly, with 5x the usage of a standard seat. Team adds central billing, single sign-on, and up to $500 a month in pooled API credits. You can mix seat types, so your heaviest user gets a premium seat and everyone else gets a standard one.

Can you switch from Pro to Max and back?

Yes, and it is low risk. Claude's pricing page says upgrades take effect right away, and unused time on your old plan is credited to the new one. Anthropic's help center adds that your new plan's limits apply right away too. Downgrades take effect at the end of your current billing period.

So you can test Max for a month during a busy stretch, then drop back to Pro. One warning. Payments are generally not refundable, apart from local rules like the 14-day withdrawal period in the EEA and UK. Upgrade when you need it, not just in case.

Will a bigger Claude plan run your marketing?

No. More usage means Claude can write more drafts, do more research and build more code. It does not mean someone is running your marketing.

Someone still has to pick the offer, run the ads, build the pages, follow up every lead and watch the numbers. Claude can help with each step. It will not own them. We went through that limit in can Claude replace your marketing team.

Lead follow-up is the clearest case. Claude Duet checks in every few hours, drafts replies for you to review, and does not text or call anyone. We want new leads answered in minutes. That is a job for your CRM and automations, not a chat plan.

If you have the time and like doing the marketing yourself, Pro at $20 a month is the better deal, and we would tell you so. If you would rather hand the work to a team, that is what Havstock Unlimited does: ads, websites, email, follow-up and AI, done for you on one flat monthly fee.

FAQ

Is Claude Max worth it for a small business?

Only if you keep hitting Pro's limits. Max costs at least $100 a month against $20 for Pro, and its main gain is 5x or 20x Pro's usage per five-hour session. If you use Claude a few times a day, Pro is enough. If limits stop your work most weeks, Max is worth a one-month test.

How much is the Claude Max plan?

Claude's pricing page lists Max as "From $100" a month, billed monthly only, checked 26 October 2026. You choose 5x or 20x Pro's usage. The page does not show a separate price for the 20x tier, so check it before you upgrade. Prices leave out tax, and Max has no yearly discount.

Can I get Claude Duet outside the US?

Not yet. Anthropic's help center says Claude Duet is available in the US only during the research preview. You need a Pro or Max plan and a Claude account in the US. Team and Enterprise plans are not included either. Anthropic's pages do not give a date for other countries.

How do I join the Claude Duet waitlist?

Go to the Claude Duet product page and select Join the waitlist. If you already use Claude, enter the email on your Claude account. Invites go out in waves, and you get an email when it is your turn. On your phone, use the Apple or Google account linked to that same email.

Does Claude Duet cost extra on Pro or Max?

No. During the research preview, Claude Duet is included with Pro and Max at no extra cost. It does use your plan's usage limits, including the five-hour session and weekly limits. Its background work, like the morning brief and check-ins, counts too, so you may hit your limits sooner.

Can I pay for Claude Max yearly?

No. Claude's pricing page lists yearly billing for Pro and Team, but Max is billed monthly only. Pro drops to $17 a month when you pay $200 up front for the year. Max stays at its monthly price, starting at $100, so a year of Max costs at least $1,200.

What happens when I hit my limit on Pro?

You have three choices. Wait, since the session limit resets every five hours. Upgrade to Max, and the new limits apply right away. Or turn on usage credits, which let you keep working at standard API rates instead of stopping. If it is the weekly limit you hit, waiting five hours will not help.

So which plan should you pick?

For most business owners, Claude Pro vs Max has a simple answer. Start on Pro at $20 a month. Use it hard for a few weeks, with Claude Duet if you can get in. If the limit keeps stopping real work, move to the Claude Max plan for a month and see if the extra room changes what you get done. If it does not, drop back.
