Claude Duet for Small Business: What It Can and Can't Do

Claude Duet is Anthropic's new always-on assistant app: it watches your email, calendar and business tools, sends you a short brief each morning, works while you are away, and asks before it sends, pays, signs or deletes anything. For a small business it is a strong back office helper. It is not a way to answer new leads. It does not text or call, and it checks your accounts every few hours, not every minute.

Anthropic opened Claude Duet as a research preview on 21 October 2026. We read the launch post, the product page and the help center that day. We have not used Duet ourselves yet, so everything here comes from Anthropic's own pages. It is a preview, so details will change. We will update this post once we have run it for a few weeks.

The short answer

  • What it is: a separate Claude app that comes to you with what needs your attention, instead of waiting for you to open a chat.
  • Who can get it: people on Claude Pro or Max with a US account, through a waitlist. Not Team or Enterprise yet.
  • What it costs: nothing extra. It uses your plan's usage limits, and its background checks count too.
  • Best jobs for a small business: inbox and calendar triage, unpaid invoice reminders, payroll prep, contracts, and big one-off jobs like a dashboard or a forecast.
  • What it will not do: answer phone calls, send texts, move money between accounts, or run your marketing for you.

What is Claude Duet?

Claude Duet is a proactive agent. Normal Claude waits for you to type. Duet comes to you.

Anthropic's Introducing Claude Duet post lists four things it does:

  1. Each morning it sends a short brief on the most important items across your connected apps.
  2. During the day it watches those apps and messages you only when something needs you.
  3. It takes jobs you send it, from booking a meeting to building a sales forecast or a dashboard.
  4. It keeps working when you put your phone down, and it checks with you before it acts for you.

It runs on its own computer in the cloud, with its own browser. So your laptop does not need to be on. It uses Claude Opus 5.5 and picks how much effort each job needs. You cannot pick the model.

You talk to it in one long thread, by typing or by voice, like messaging a staff member. You can also start separate channels that share the same memory. Finished work, like a deck or a spreadsheet, lands in a Make tab as files you can edit. A Tasks tab shows what it is working on and what is waiting on you.

It also brings over what Claude already knows about you: your memory, your skills and the apps you have connected in the main Claude app.

Claude waits for you. Duet comes to you. That is the whole difference.

Who can get Claude Duet, and what does it cost?

Right now the rules are tight. This is from Anthropic's Get started with Claude Duet help article, checked 21 October 2026:

  • You need a Claude Pro or Max plan and a US Claude account.
  • You join a waitlist on the product page and wait for an invite. Invites go out in waves, so there is no set date.
  • The waitlist email must match your Claude account and the Apple or Google account on your phone.
  • It runs as its own app on iPhone and Android, and on claude.ai on a computer.
  • Team and Enterprise plans do not have it yet. Anthropic says they will come later.

There is no extra fee in the preview. Duet draws from the same five-hour and weekly limits as the rest of Claude. Here is what those plans cost on Claude's pricing page on 21 October 2026:

PlanPrice (USD)Claude Duet?
Pro$20 a month, or $17 a month paid yearlyYes, US waitlist
MaxFrom $100 a month, for 5x or 20x Pro's usageYes, US waitlist
TeamFrom $20 a seat a month, paid yearlyNot yet

The catch is usage. Anthropic says the background checks count toward your limits, and big jobs like a financial model or a deck take more work. If you already hit your Pro limits in normal chat, Duet will get you there faster. When you are let in, Anthropic resets both of your limits once. That gives you a clean start to test it.

What can Claude Duet do for a small business?

Anthropic says it built Duet for professionals and small business owners. Its examples are mostly back office work. Here are the jobs it names in the launch post and help center, by tool:

Tool you connectWhat Duet doesWhat waits for your OK
Gmail, SlackFinds missed messages and drafts repliesSending the reply
Google CalendarSpots clashes and offers to move meetingsSending the change
Stripe, QuickBooksFinds unpaid invoices and drafts remindersSending each reminder
GustoPrepares payroll with hours, bonuses and expenses filled inRunning payroll
DocusignPrepares agreements for reviewSending for signature
HubSpotDrafts follow-up emails from contact and deal historySending the emails
LinkedInDrafts a job postPosting it, after you edit it
CanvaTurns a product launch into a social campaignAnything that gets posted or sent
ShopifySets up, designs and runs a storeAnything that pays, sends or deletes

Anthropic says Duet works with more than 6,000 connectors and plugins, including Anthropic's small business plugin. For a site with no connector, it uses its own browser. When it reports a number, it tells you which email, file or spreadsheet the number came from. That is worth a lot when the number is your cash.

The launch post also shares three early testers who run small businesses:

  • A real estate broker got an alert, without asking, that a property showing was on her calendar on the wrong day.
  • A restaurant owner with about 110 staff uses it for accounting, customer support and marketing. He went through invoices one store at a time.
  • A brand strategist got a brief before a client call. Duet saw the call was right before her flight and offered to move it.

Those are the jobs it is made for. Small, dull, easy to miss, and costly when missed.

It can buy things for you, with your OK

Duet can pay at online stores with Link, Stripe's wallet, or Shop Pay, Shopify's wallet. Each purchase uses a one-time card that only works for that order, so your real card number is not shared. You approve every purchase. Link and Shop Pay are set up inside Duet, not in Claude's normal connector list.

Handy for reordering supplies. But Anthropic says personal errands, like booking tickets, are weaker for now, because Duet was built mainly for work.

What Claude Duet will not do

This is the part that matters most if you run a service business. All of it is from Anthropic's own help article:

  • No phone calls or texts. It can send email from your connected accounts, with your approval. It cannot call or text anyone.
  • It is not instant. It checks your accounts at set times, every few hours. You can change what it tells you about and how often. Urgent items can still reach you late.
  • Some money moves are off limits. It will not trade shares, move money between accounts or get into someone else's account, even if you say yes.
  • No Microsoft 365 yet. If your business runs on Outlook, you will have to wait.
  • It cannot see your computer. It cannot reach files on your laptop or all of your Claude projects. It can read your Claude work, but not change it.
  • It can get it wrong. Anthropic says it may misread a thread or misjudge what is urgent. Read drafts before you approve them.

Why Claude Duet is not your lead follow-up system

Picture this. A new customer fills in your quote form at 7:10 pm. They need a leak fixed, a tooth looked at, a treatment booked.

Here is what Duet can do with that. The form lands in Gmail. Duet sees it at its next check, which may be a few hours later. It drafts an email reply. Then it waits for you to approve. If you are on a job, or asleep, it waits longer.

No text. No call. Just an email draft sitting in a queue.

For a plumber, a dentist or a med spa, that gap is the whole game. People with an urgent need often ask two or three businesses at once and book the first one that gets back to them. An assistant that checks in every few hours was never built for that race.

So keep the fast work on tools built for speed:

Then let Duet do what it is good at: the morning after. Ask it to flag any quote request that still has no reply after a day, any finished job with no invoice, and any invoice that is late. That is a safety net, not the first reply.

Use Duet as the safety net under your follow-up, not as the follow-up.

Claude Duet vs Claude, Cowork and Claude Code

Anthropic now has a few ways to get work done, and the names blur. Cowork, the part of Claude that works with your files and tools, is now folded into the main Claude app, per Claude's pricing page on 21 October 2026. Here is the simple version:

ProductWhat it isWho starts the workBest for
Claude (with Cowork)The app you open to chat, write and work on filesYouWork you sit down and do with it
Claude DuetA separate app that briefs you and works in the background, on its own cloud computerDuet or youDaily admin across inbox, calendar and money tools
Claude CodeA coding agent that builds softwareYouWebsites, apps and scripts
Claude Managed AgentsAgents a developer builds and hosts on Anthropic's cloudYour codeCustom agents inside a product or team

The big change with Duet is who starts the conversation. Every other Claude product waits for you. If you want to go deeper on agents you build yourself, we compared Claude Managed Agents and OpenClaw.

Is it safe to connect your business accounts?

Anthropic has put more guard rails on Duet than on most agents we have read about. From the launch post and help center:

  • Approvals. Before it sends a message, pays, signs or deletes, it shows you exactly what it will do and waits. If you cannot answer, it carries on with other work and asks again later.
  • Passwords. It never sees your passwords or sign-in tokens directly. When a site asks for a password, you type it into a separate form on your phone.
  • Sensitive details. A new screening system is built to refuse to share things like card numbers and government ID. Health and personal finance details are only shared when you say so.
  • Testing. Anthropic says its own red teams and an outside firm tried to break it, and it is part of a public bug bounty.
  • Disconnecting. You can cut off any app at any time. Duet keeps its memory of what it already saw.

One honest warning from Anthropic itself. Duet can still be tricked by hidden instructions inside an email or a web page. The approval step is the main thing that stops a bad action. So the approval only protects you if you read it.

Our advice: connect in stages. Start with the tools it reads, add the tools that pay later.

A first week with Claude Duet

If you get an invite, here is how we would roll it out in a service business. One tool at a time, so you can tell what is working.

  1. Day 1: email and calendar only. Connect Gmail and Google Calendar. Tell it what you want to hear about, for example: "Only message me about customer complaints, quote requests with no reply after a day, and calendar clashes."
  2. Day 2: check the brief. Read the morning brief next to your own inbox. What did it miss? What did it flag that did not matter? Tell it in plain words.
  3. Day 3: add your invoices. Connect Stripe or QuickBooks. Ask it to find every invoice more than 14 days late and draft a polite reminder for each. Read the drafts before any go out.
  4. Day 4: give it one big job. Pick something you keep putting off. A one-page dashboard of jobs, cash and unpaid invoices. A price list. A checklist for your next new hire.
  5. Day 5: check your usage. If the background work is eating your limits, have it check less often, or decide if Max is worth it for you.
  6. Week 2: add the tools that sign or pay. Only once you trust its drafts. Docusign, Gusto, Link.

What should you ask Claude Duet to do?

Anthropic says you message it like a teammate, with no special prompts. Here are messages we would send on day one:

  • "Each morning, list quote requests from the last 24 hours with no reply, and draft a reply to each."
  • "Every Friday, find jobs on my calendar this week that have no invoice in Stripe."
  • "Read my last 50 customer emails and list the five questions people ask most. Draft a short answer for each."
  • "Before each client call tomorrow, send me a brief: who they are, what we last said, and what is still open."

Where Claude Duet stops and marketing starts

Duet can draft a social campaign in Canva and write follow-up emails in HubSpot. That is useful. But drafting is not the same as marketing.

Someone still has to pick the offer, write ads that sell, build the page they land on, set the budget, watch the numbers, and fix what is not working. Duet can help with each of those. It will not own them. It works on what you ask, and it waits for you to approve. If you are too busy to run your marketing, more drafts to check will not fix that.

We wrote about this limit in more detail in can Claude replace your marketing team.

If you would rather hand the marketing to a team, that is what Havstock Unlimited does: ads, websites, email, follow-up and AI, done for you on one flat monthly fee. Then Duet can keep your inbox and invoices in line, and we keep the leads coming in.

Who should wait

Claude Duet will not suit you yet if:

  • You are outside the US, or on a Team or Enterprise plan. You cannot get it.
  • Your business runs on Outlook and Microsoft 365. It does not connect yet.
  • You need customers answered by phone or text. It does neither.
  • You tap Approve without reading. The approvals are the safety system. If you skip them, the risk is yours.

FAQ

What is Claude Duet?

Claude Duet is a proactive assistant app from Anthropic, launched as a research preview on 21 October 2026. It connects to your email, calendar and business tools, sends a morning brief, works in the background on its own cloud computer, and asks before it sends, pays, signs or deletes anything.

How much does Claude Duet cost?

There is no extra charge during the preview. Claude Duet is included in Claude Pro ($20 a month, or $17 a month paid yearly) and Max (from $100 a month). It uses your plan's usage limits, and its background checks and morning briefs count toward them.

Is Claude Duet available outside the US?

Not yet. On launch day, Claude Duet was open by waitlist to Pro and Max users with a US Claude account only. Team and Enterprise plans were not included either. Anthropic says invites go out in waves and other plans will come later, but it has not given dates.

Can Claude Duet answer calls or texts from my customers?

No. Anthropic's help center says Claude Duet does not make phone calls or send texts. It can send email from your connected accounts, and only after you approve it. For new leads, use a missed call text back, an answering service or instant replies from your CRM instead.

Does Claude Duet work with Outlook and Microsoft 365?

Not yet. Anthropic's help center lists Microsoft 365 as not available during the preview. The connectors it names include Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Drive, Slack, QuickBooks, HubSpot, Docusign and Calendly. If your business runs on Outlook, wait for Microsoft support before you sign up.

Is Claude Duet safe to connect to my business accounts?

It has strong guard rails. It asks before it sends, pays, signs or deletes, it never sees your passwords directly, and each purchase uses a one-time card. But Anthropic warns it can still be tricked by hidden instructions in emails or web pages, so read every approval before you tap it.

Is Claude Duet the same as Google's Duet AI?

No. Google's Duet AI was its AI for Gmail and Docs, and Google renamed it Gemini in February 2024. Claude Duet is a new Anthropic product from October 2026. There is also an unrelated AI tool called Duet at duet.so. Search for "Claude Duet" to find the right one.

The bottom line

Claude Duet for small business is a back office helper that comes to you. Give it the inbox, the late invoices and the paperwork. Keep your lead replies on tools that answer in seconds. If you are in the US on Pro or Max, join the waitlist. We will update this post once we have used it on real work.
