Missed call text back sends an automatic text to anyone whose call you miss, a few seconds after the phone stops ringing. The caller gets a reply straight away, so they are more likely to text you back than to ring the next business on the list. This guide covers when it works, what to write, and how to set it up in GoHighLevel step by step.

The short answer
Missed call text back is worth turning on for almost any business that takes calls. The texts cost very little (see the costs below) and keep missed callers talking to you. But it is only an opener. It works when someone replies to the text within minutes. If nobody does, it is just a polite way to lose the job a little later.
What is missed call text back?
It is an automation on your business phone line. When a call goes unanswered, the system sends the caller a text from your business number. Something like:
Sorry we missed your call. How can we help? Reply here and we will get back to you shortly.
The caller can then answer by text, on their own time, while you finish the job you were on. Their reply lands in your inbox like any other message.
GoHighLevel's own help page describes it simply: it sends a text when an inbound call is missed, so the caller knows the call was noticed and can keep the conversation going by text (HighLevel Support, modified 7 September 2026).
Does missed call text back work?
Yes, with three conditions.
1. Someone has to answer the reply
The text buys you a few minutes, not a few hours. If a customer replies "Can you come today?" and hears nothing until tomorrow, the automation has done nothing for you. Before you switch it on, decide who watches the inbox and how fast they reply.
2. The text has to sound like a person
"Your call is important to us" reads like a machine and gets ignored. A short, plain question gets answered. More on what to write below.
3. It cannot replace answering the phone for emergencies
Someone with water coming through the ceiling will not wait for a text conversation. They will keep calling down the list until a person picks up. For urgent work, pair the text with a way to answer live calls. We compared the options in our guide to choosing a plumbing answering service, and the same logic applies to any trade.
And it has hard limits. A caller on a landline cannot get a text. Someone who called by mistake will get one anyway. And if the same person rings three times, some setups send three texts (more on fixing that below).
Our take: turn it on, but treat it as the floor, not the whole system. The text starts the conversation. Your follow-up wins the job.
Why it matters more from 1 October 2026
If you run Google Local Services Ads, missed calls start costing money. From 1 October 2026, Google can charge a missed call during your business hours as a lead if the caller waits on the line for more than 20 seconds (Search Engine Roundtable, 25 August 2026). We covered the details in what the Local Services Ads missed-call charges mean.
So a missed call may now cost you the lead fee whether you follow up or not. A text back is the cheapest way to give yourself a second chance at a job you may already be paying for.
What to write in your missed call text
Keep it short, human and easy to answer. Five rules:
- Say who you are. The caller may have rung five businesses. Put your business name first.
- Ask one question. "What do you need help with?" is easy to answer. Three questions is a form.
- Say when a person will reply. "Within 15 minutes" or "first thing tomorrow". Then keep that promise.
- Stay under 160 characters. GoHighLevel bills texts by the segment, and one segment is 160 plain characters (HighLevel Support). Short also reads better on a phone.
- No sales pitch. It is a reply to their call, not a promo. Leave out offers and links.
Some examples you can adapt:
| Use | Text |
|---|---|
| Any business | Hi, it's [Business]. Sorry we missed your call. How can we help? A real person will reply shortly. |
| Trades, during the day | Hi, [Business] here. We're on a job and missed your call. What's the problem and where are you? We'll reply within 15 min. |
| After hours | Thanks for calling [Business]. We're closed now. Reply with what you need and we'll get back to you first thing tomorrow. |
| Clinics and salons | Hi, it's [Business]. Sorry we missed you. Want to book, change or ask something? Reply here and we'll help. |
If you have an emergency line, add it to the after-hours text. That way urgent callers are not left waiting on a text thread.
How to set up missed call text back in GoHighLevel
GoHighLevel has missed call text back built in. If you do not have an account yet, you can start a 30-day free trial of GoHighLevel here (the standard trial on their pricing page is 14 days). These steps follow GoHighLevel's own help page, modified 7 September 2026:
- In your sub-account, click Settings in the bottom-left corner.
- Click Phone System in the left menu, then Voice in the top menu.
- Open Voicemail & Missed Call Text Back, then click Missed Call Text Back in the side panel.
- Tick Enable Missed Call Text Back, then click Customize.
- Type your message. You can add merge fields like the contact's name, but they only fill in if the contact is already in your system, so write a message that also reads well without them.
- Send yourself a test, check how it looks on your phone, then click Save.
That turns it on. Four settings decide whether it works well.
Set the ring timeout
The incoming call timeout decides how long the phone rings before a call counts as missed and the text goes out. GoHighLevel's help page says 10 to 20 seconds is typically recommended. Too long and the text arrives late. Too short and you cut off calls your team would have picked up.
If you run Local Services Ads, remember Google's own clock: a missed business-hours call where the caller stays on the line past 20 seconds can be charged. Google has not said how a call that goes to voicemail is counted, so do not assume a short timeout stops the charge. Its job is to get the text out fast.
Stop double texts
GoHighLevel's help page warns that the built-in setting sends a text for every missed call, even when the same person calls several times in a row. Its fix: use the missed call text back recipe in Workflows instead, and add a wait step of about 20 minutes, or use tags like "1st call" and "2nd call". If your customers tend to ring twice, do this. Three identical texts in two minutes looks broken.
A workflow also lets you do more than one text: tag the contact, notify your team, and start a short follow-up if they do not reply. Our guide to GoHighLevel follow-up sequences shows how to build that part.
Register for A2P 10DLC first
To text US mobile numbers from a local business number through GoHighLevel's phone system (LC Phone), you must register your brand and your messaging campaign with The Campaign Registry. GoHighLevel calls this A2P 10DLC and says every business using LC Phone must do it (HighLevel Support, modified 24 September 2026). Do this before you switch on the text back, or your messages may not be delivered.
Check which number the text comes from
If the number someone called cannot send texts, GoHighLevel now picks another eligible number in your account instead of letting the text fail. That covers call tracking numbers, number pools and unverified toll-free numbers. So the text may come from a different number than the one they dialled. That is expected, but it can confuse a customer, so put your business name at the start of the message.
What it costs in GoHighLevel
The feature itself comes with the account. You pay for the plan, a phone number, the texts and the one-off registration. Prices from GoHighLevel's pricing page and help pages, checked 27 September 2026:
| Cost | Price | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Plan | Starter $97 a month, Unlimited $297 a month | GoHighLevel pricing |
| US local phone number | $1.15 a month | LC Phone pricing guide, modified 24 Sep 2026 |
| Each text sent (US) | $0.00747 per segment, plus carrier fees | LC Phone pricing guide |
| Carrier fees | About $0.005 per segment at most, per GoHighLevel's estimate | How to calculate SMS costs, modified 23 Jul 2026 |
| A2P registration | $22.50 one-time for most small businesses, then $1.50 to $10 a month per campaign | A2P 10DLC fees, modified 24 Sep 2026 |
So the texts themselves are close to free. Using those rates, 100 missed-call texts of one segment each come to about $1.25 a month. Replies are charged too. The plan is the real cost, which is why GoHighLevel only makes sense if you will use more than this one feature.
The trial is the easiest way to find out. Our link gives you a 30-day free trial of GoHighLevel. The page says you will not be charged the subscription during the trial, but usage charges like texts may still apply.
Mistakes to avoid
- Switching it on with nobody watching the inbox. The reply is the whole point.
- Skipping A2P registration. Without it, your texts may not be delivered.
- Sending a text for every repeat call. Use the workflow version with a wait step.
- Writing a pitch. A missed-call text with an offer in it reads like spam.
- Promising a reply time you cannot keep. "Within 15 minutes" is great until it is 3 hours.
- Using it instead of answering. It is a backup for missed calls, not a reason to let the phone ring.
Do you need GoHighLevel for this?
Not always. Check your current phone system first. If it already sends an automatic reply to missed calls, turn it on there and you are done.
GoHighLevel makes sense when you want the rest of the system around it: every text, call, web chat and form in one inbox, a CRM that remembers each lead, and follow-ups that run until the customer books. If you only ever want the one text, $97 a month is a lot to pay for it. You can read more about what GoHighLevel's texting can do in our GoHighLevel SMS marketing guide.
If you would rather have the whole lead system built and run for you, from the ads to the follow-up, see how Havstock Unlimited works.
FAQ
What is missed call text back?
It is an automation that texts a caller when you miss their call. The text usually says who you are, apologises for missing them and asks how you can help. The caller can reply by text, and the conversation carries on in your inbox. It turns a missed call into a message you can still answer.
Does missed call text back work?
It works as a fast first reply, as long as someone answers the customer's text within minutes. It will not reach landlines, and it will not stop an emergency caller from ringing the next business. Treat it as a backup to answering the phone, and pair it with a quick human reply.
How do I turn on missed call text back in GoHighLevel?
Go to Settings, then Phone System, then Voice, then Voicemail & Missed Call Text Back. Tick Enable Missed Call Text Back, click Customize, write your message, send a test and save. Register for A2P 10DLC first, and use the workflow recipe with a wait step if callers often ring more than once.
How much does missed call text back cost?
In GoHighLevel the feature is included, but you pay for the plan (from $97 a month), a US number ($1.15 a month), each text ($0.00747 per segment plus carrier fees) and A2P registration ($22.50 one-time for most small businesses). At those rates, 100 one-segment texts cost about $1.25.
What should a missed call text say?
Your business name, a short sorry, one easy question and when a person will reply. For example: "Hi, it's [Business]. Sorry we missed your call. How can we help? A real person will reply shortly." Keep it under 160 characters, and leave out offers and links.
Why did my missed call text come from a different number?
If the number the customer called cannot send texts, such as a call tracking number or an unverified toll-free number, GoHighLevel sends the text from another eligible number in your account. It tries the number called first, then one you have texted that contact from before, then your default number.
Missed call text back is one of the cheapest fixes a service business can make. Turn it on, write a text that sounds like you, and make sure someone answers the replies. That is the part that wins the job.
