SEO for a small business costs about $1,500 a month on average, and most SEO providers charge $2,000 a month or less. Those numbers come from Ahrefs' poll of 439 SEO providers. Bigger agencies charge more. Clutch puts the average at about $3,200 a month. So how much does SEO cost for a small business like yours? It depends on how you pay, who does the work and how busy your local market is.
We read the main SEO price surveys and Google's own advice on hiring an SEO on 18 October 2026. Most of these surveys come from companies that sell SEO or SEO tools, so use them as a rough range.
The short answer
- Monthly retainer: about $1,557 a month for local SEO, and about $3,200 a month at an agency.
- Hourly: about $111 an hour on average. 90% of SEOs charge $150 an hour or less.
- One-off project: $2,501 to $5,000 is the most common fee.
- Under $500 a month: buys a few hours of work, so expect the basics only.
- Red flag: anyone who guarantees a top ranking. Google says no one can.
How much does SEO cost for a small business?
About $1,500 a month, on average, if you hire someone to do local SEO. Ahrefs asked 439 SEO providers what they charge. For small businesses, it says the cost is "likely around $1,557 per month on average". It adds that very small businesses with basic needs may pay less.
Other surveys land in the same area:
| Source | Who they asked | What they found | Date on the page |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ahrefs | 439 SEO providers | $2,917 a month on average. Local SEO $1,557. 68.8% charge $2,000 a month or less | First published December 2023, updated 15 August 2024 |
| Clutch | Client reviews of SEO agencies listed on Clutch | $3,199 a month on average. Usual project length 12 months | Updated 21 September 2026 |
| SE Ranking | 260 agencies, 94% of them serving small or local businesses | $500 to $1,000 a month is the most popular range. 30% charge under $500 | 13 December 2024 |
| Neil Patel | 500 US workers who know what their company spends on SEO | $1,001 to $2,500 a month is the most common band. Only 5.4% spend under $500 | Updated 7 November 2025 |
We checked all four on 18 October 2026. The Ahrefs and SE Ranking numbers are a couple of years old, and SE Ranking found 38% of agencies planned to raise their rates in 2025. So quotes today may be a bit higher. Clutch lists bigger agencies, so its average sits above what a local freelancer charges.
Our view: for a local small business, quotes between $500 and $2,500 a month are normal. Outside that range, ask why.
SEO services pricing: the three ways SEOs charge
SEO services pricing works in three ways. Most SEOs use a monthly retainer. In the Ahrefs survey, 78.2% charge that way, 48.9% charge per project and 34.8% charge by the hour. Plenty use more than one.
| How you pay | Typical price | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly retainer | $501 to $1,000 is the most popular band. Agencies average $3,209, freelancers $1,349 | Ongoing work: new pages, links, reviews, fixes | Paying every month with no list of what was done |
| One-off project | $2,501 to $5,000 is the most popular fee | An audit, a site fix, a set of service pages | A report with nobody to do the fixes |
| Hourly | $111 an hour on average. 90% charge $150 or less | Advice, training, a second opinion on a quote | Open-ended hours with no cap |
Source: Ahrefs' SEO pricing survey, checked 18 October 2026. Clutch's page says most SEO agencies listed there charge $100 to $149 an hour.
Monthly SEO pricing: what a retainer pays for
A retainer pays for a set amount of work each month: site fixes, new or better pages, listings on other sites and a report. It suits a business that wants more search traffic over a year or more. Who you hire changes your SEO monthly cost a lot. In the Ahrefs survey, the most common agency retainer was $500 to $1,000 a month. For consultants it was $2,501 to $5,000.
When does a one-off SEO project make sense?
When you know what is broken, or you can do the ongoing work yourself. Think of an audit, a fix for a slow site, or a page for each service you offer. Ask for a fixed price and a list of what you will have at the end.
What do SEOs charge per hour?
About $111 an hour on average in the Ahrefs survey. Hourly suits a short job, like a second opinion on a quote. For big jobs it is risky, because nobody knows how many hours they will take.
Local SEO vs national SEO cost
Local SEO costs less. It means showing up when people near you search, on Google Maps and in the normal results. National SEO means ranking across the whole country, up against much bigger sites.
Ahrefs split its numbers this way:
| Average price | SEOs serving local markets | SEOs serving worldwide |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly retainer | $1,557 | $3,474 |
| Per project | $5,724 | $8,057 |
| Per hour | $94 | $107 |
A bigger area costs more. A plumber in one town needs a strong Google Business Profile, a page for each service and good reviews. An online store selling across the country needs far more pages and far more links. If you run several locations under one brand, our guide to franchise SEO covers how that changes the work.
How much does local SEO cost?
About $1,557 a month on average, by Ahrefs' numbers. Agencies charge about $1,819 for local work and freelancers about $1,150. In a small town you may need less. In a big city, plan on more.
What does a $300 a month SEO package get you?
A few hours of work. At the Ahrefs average of $111 an hour, $300 buys under three hours a month. At $75 an hour, it buys four. That is not much time to write a page, fix a site and build links.
Cheap packages are common. SE Ranking found 30% of agencies charge under $500 a month. In the Ahrefs survey, the most common retainers for freelancers were $101 to $500 a month.
In our view, three hours a month can only cover a ranking report made by a tool, some directory listings and maybe one short post. Some add links from sites that have nothing to do with you. That is the risky part. Google's spam policies (checked 18 October 2026) list "buying or selling links for ranking purposes" as link spam, and it is your site that carries the risk.
In an r/smallbusiness thread from August 2025, a small service business owner shared three quotes: $500, $650 and $1,300 a month. One reply, from someone who runs a web agency, said to avoid the $500 one. Their reason: it was not enough work to matter, and it had no pages for each location.
A $300 package can be fine for one service in a small town. Even then, you can do most of the basics yourself for free, as shown below.
$300 a month buys about three hours of an SEO's time. Ask what they will do with those three hours.
What you should get from SEO each month
You should be able to see the work. Google's page on hiring an SEO suggests asking if they will "share with me all the changes you make to my site". The answer should be yes.
Each month, ask for these:
- The plan. Which searches and pages they will work on this month.
- The changes. Every page written, updated or fixed, with a link to each one.
- The links and listings. The name of every site that now links to you or lists you.
- The results. Calls and form fills, next to rankings.
- Your logins. Your website, domain, Google Business Profile and Search Console stay in your name.
Point 3 matters more than it looks. In an r/SEO thread from November 2025, a small business owner was four months into an SEO contract. Someone else looked at the site, saw a big jump in backlinks and called the SEO's strategy toxic. The owner did not know who to believe. A monthly list of links would have shown what they were paying for.
On point 5, Google says that if an SEO offers an audit, give them read access to Search Console only at that stage, not write access.
SEO red flags to watch for
Google's page Do you need an SEO? (last updated 5 June 2026, checked 18 October 2026) says it plainly: "No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google." Walk away if you see any of these:
- Guaranteed rankings. Google says if an SEO guarantees their changes will put you first, "find someone else".
- A "special relationship" with Google, or a "priority submit". Google names both as warning signs.
- Secret methods. Google says to be careful if a company "won't clearly explain what they intend to do".
- Cold emails saying you are not listed. Google says it gets these spam emails too, and tells you to doubt them like any other spam.
- Bought links. Paying for links to rank breaks Google's spam policies.
- They own your stuff. If the Business Profile, the website or the domain is in their name, leaving gets hard.
- A long lock-in before any results. Ask for month to month, or a short first term.
The last two are our view. Google does not list them. You should be free to leave and take your work with you.
If an SEO promises you the top spot on Google, Google itself says to find someone else.
How long does SEO take to work?
It takes months. Google's SEO Starter Guide (checked 18 October 2026) says: "Some changes might take effect in a few hours, others could take several months." It suggests waiting a few weeks before you judge any one change.
Clutch's client reviews put the usual SEO project at 12 months. In the r/smallbusiness thread above, one SEO said the first six months need the most work.
How we would judge it:
- Months 1 to 3: judge the work. Did they do what they said?
- Months 3 to 6: look for early signs, like more searches showing you in Search Console.
- Months 6 to 12: judge the calls and leads. That is what you are paying for.
Google suggests asking any SEO you interview: "What kind of results do you expect to see, and in what timeframe?" Get the answer in writing.
Does SEO cost more now because of AI answers?
It should not cost much more. More people now ask ChatGPT or read Google's AI Overviews before they click. Getting named in those answers is called AEO, short for answer engine optimization.
Google's page on AI features and your website (last updated 10 December 2025, checked 18 October 2026) says "There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary." It also says you do not need new "AI text files" or special markup.
So be careful of an "AI ranking package" sold on top of normal SEO. The work that gets you into AI answers is mostly the same work: clear pages that answer real questions, a site crawlers can read, and your name on other trusted sites. Our guide on how to get your business recommended by ChatGPT covers the ChatGPT side step by step.
AEO should be part of what your SEO already does each month. If someone charges a lot extra for it, ask what they will do differently.
Google says there is no special trick for AI Overviews. Do not pay extra for one.
Can you do SEO yourself?
Yes, a lot of the local basics. If money is tight, start here before you pay anyone.
- Claim your Google Business Profile. Google says "creating a Business Profile and listing your business on Google is free." Our guide to Google Business Profile verification covers the step people get stuck on.
- Fill in every field. Categories, services, hours, service area and photos. Google says to make your info "as complete as possible".
- Ask for reviews and reply to them. Google says "More reviews and positive ratings can help your business's local ranking."
- Make one page per service on your website. Put the answers to the big questions at the top: what it costs, how fast you can come, and where you work.
- Verify your site in Google Search Console. Google suggests it to spot problems with your site early.
One thing you cannot do is pay Google to rank higher on Maps. Google's help page on local ranking (checked 18 October 2026) says "There's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking on Google." If you still cannot find yourself after all this, our guide on why a business is not showing on Google Maps goes through the causes in order.
Doing it yourself is free, but it takes your time. If your hours are worth more doing paid work, paying someone starts to make sense.
What to budget for SEO: a worked example
These are example numbers, not results. Say you run a local cleaning company. You make $250 profit on an average job, and you get a local SEO quote of $1,200 a month.
| Item | Example number |
|---|---|
| SEO retainer | $1,200 a month |
| Profit on one average job | $250 |
| Jobs from search you need to break even | $1,200 divided by $250 = about 5 a month |
| Spend before you judge it (6 months) | $7,200 |
| Spend over a full year | $14,400 |
Now ask two questions. Can you afford $7,200 before you know if it works? Can your area send you five extra jobs a month from Google? If customers come back for years, one new customer is worth far more than one job, and the maths gets easier.
If both answers are no, do the free steps above first. Then pay for one project instead of a retainer, such as a page for each service. In the Ahrefs survey, $2,501 to $5,000 was the most common project fee.
Work out how many jobs a month pay for the SEO. Then ask if search can send you that many.
Freelancer, agency or marketing subscription?
If SEO is the only thing you need, hire a dedicated SEO freelancer or agency. Ahrefs found freelancers average about $1,349 a month, against $3,209 for agencies.
An agency costs more but gives you more people. If you are weighing up bigger options, read our guides to a full-service marketing agency and to a marketing agency retainer vs a subscription.
Here is where we fit, and where we do not. Havstock Unlimited is $4,995 a month, month to month. It includes SEO and AEO and blog posts, along with ads, websites, email and your CRM. We run SEO on our own site too. We publish two blog posts a day on havstock.com, so we know how much work goes into each month.
This will not suit you if SEO is all you want. A specialist will do SEO alone for far less. It makes sense when you want ads, your website, email follow-up and SEO done by one team for one flat fee. FAQ
How much should a small business spend on SEO per month?
There is no fixed number. Local SEO averages about $1,557 a month in Ahrefs' survey of 439 SEO providers, and 68.8% of providers charge $2,000 a month or less. Start from your own numbers. Work out how many extra jobs a month would pay for it, and whether search can send you that many.
Is $500 a month enough for SEO?
It can be enough for the basics in a small town with few competitors. At the Ahrefs average of $111 an hour, $500 buys four to five hours of work a month. That covers small fixes and a report, but not much new content or links. In a busy market, expect to need more.
How much does local SEO cost?
Local SEO averaged $1,557 a month in Ahrefs' survey, against $3,474 for SEOs who serve worldwide markets. Agencies charge more than freelancers for local work. Local SEO costs less because you only compete with businesses near you, and a lot of the work runs through your free Google Business Profile.
Are cheap SEO services good?
Some are fine for a small job, like setting up listings or a one-off audit. The risk is what gets cut to hit the price. Watch for bought links, which break Google's spam policies, and for reports with no list of the work done. Ask exactly what you get for the money each month.
Is SEO worth it for a small business?
It is worth it when people search for what you sell and one new customer is worth a lot to you. Divide the monthly cost by the profit on one job to see how many jobs you need. If the answer is two or three, it is often a fair bet. If it is twenty, probably not.
How long does SEO take to work?
Expect months. Google's SEO Starter Guide says some changes show in a few hours and others take several months. Clutch's client reviews put the usual SEO project at 12 months. Judge the work itself in the first three months, then judge the calls and leads after six to twelve months.
So how much does SEO cost for a small business? For most, around $1,500 a month for local SEO. It costs less if you do the basics yourself, and more in a big, busy market. Whatever you pay, get a monthly list of the work, keep your logins in your own name, and walk away from anyone who guarantees rankings.
